With the increasing push toward the electrification of transportation, it’s only natural for more and more manufacturers to step into the ring, but what about exotics? Will Lamborghini ever make an electric supercar? A new concept from Lamborghini called the Terzo Millennio may have some of your answers.
Terzo Millennio sure is an interesting car name. As with all Lamborghini car names, it has a great deal of meaning behind it. This time though, it has nothing to do with bulls or bullfighting. Instead, when translated from its native Italian, it simply means Third Millennium. Does the “third millennium” seem like a long way in the future?

Well technically, it’s not. The first millennium lasted from the year 0 to the year 1,000 in the modern calendar. Walking it forward, that means that the current millennium is the third millennium. In a way, Lamborghini is labeling this as a future car that we should have today!

The Terzo Millennio was built to push the limits of five different dimensions, namely energy storage systems, innovative materials, propulsion systems, design, and emotion. Those last two are almost a given on any Lamborghini design, and the exotic manufacturer is innovating with materials every day.

When it comes to energy storage, Lamborghini is looking in a different direction. Instead of batteries, it is considering the use of low-voltage supercapacitors. A variant of these has already been in the Aventador for the last five years. With this newly devised system, the Terzo Millennio would be able to both release and harvest energy with extreme efficiency.
Not only is the Terzo Millennio envisioned as an electric supercar, but the Lamborghini design calls for four electric motors each mounted to their own individual wheel. By pairing the motors so closely to the wheels, Lamborghini frees up the rest of the car providing an unprecedented amount of freedom for aerodynamicists and designers.
Lamborghini usually takes care of all designing in-house, but for this glimpse into the future, they enlisted the help of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or MIT. Their goal was to imagine the design and technology of tomorrow while sustaining the breath-taking beauty and intrigue of the Lamborghini brand. We for one, think they succeeded. Though this is a concept car, we hope to see more!
