A look back at the legendary Lamborghini Jalpa

What are some of the distinct aspects of the Lamborghini Jalpa?

In a market that is filled with consumer-centric car manufacturers, Lamborghini has successfully managed to hold its own over the years with its unique, powerful, beautiful, and energetic lineup of vehicles. Taking a look back at Lamborghini’s history, the brand has manufactured some iconic cars, one of them being the Lamborghini Jalpa. So, what are some of the distinct aspects of the Lamborghini Jalpa? Well, here is an article by Lamborghini Palm Beach in West Palm Beach, Florida, that dives into the distinct features and aspects of the Jalpa.

Lamborghini is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Jalpa. The Jalpa was presented for the first time to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1981. The Jalpa takes its name from a breed of fighting bulls known as the Jalpa Kandachia. It is the last evolution of Lamborghini’s grand touring sedan concept with an eight-cylinder engine mounted in the rear-mid position. The Jalpa product line that sports a Targa opening roof was designed by Frenchman Marc Deschamps of Carrozzeria Bertone. Looking to acquire the Lamborghini Jalpa to your car collection? Distinct Aspects of the Lamborghini Jalpa

The Lamborghini Jalpa is the final development of the Urraco and Silhouette project, which retains the general architecture, but is designed to accommodate a larger engine, increased to 3.5 liters.

The most significant and unique technical innovation on the Jalpa is the final evolution of the 90-degree V-8 engine. The engine was made completely of aluminum, with four chain-controlled overhead camshafts that were originally installed on the Urraco and Silhouette. Thanks to the increased bore, the 3.5-liter engine produced 255 horsepower and a maximum torque of 32 kgm. This enabled the Jalpa to reach a maximum speed of 155 MPH.

The Jalpa that was presented in Geneva back in 1981, can be recognized easily thanks to its special metallic bronze color and unique aesthetic features that were not used on the production car. The final version of the Jalpa that entered production in 1982, had a semi-supporting steel body, black bumpers, engine air intakes, horizontal rear lamps, and 16-inch alloy wheels. These design aspects were taken directly from the Athon prototype. The interior of the Jalpa is luxurious thanks to the extensive usage of leather and carpeting. The opening Targa roof was designed to facilitate easy removal and reassembly and could be stored in a special space behind the rear seats.

The Jalpa’s run ended in 1988 after the production of 420 cars, shortly after the introduction of the second series Jalpa in 1984. It was the last Lamborghini sedan produced with a V-8 engine and is also the last sports car of its class to feature this particular engine displacement and positioning. Conceptually speaking, the Jalpa is the direct predecessor of the 2003 Gallardo.
