There is no doubt that the Urus is an impressive machine, but how does it compare to the original Lamborghini SUV: the LM002? Let’s find out with our Lamborghini Urus vs Lamborghini LM002 comparison. The results may surprise you.
What is the Lamborghini LM002?
When you talk about Lamborghini, the first thing that always comes to mind is what’s under the hood. For the LM002, that was a monstrous V12 marine engine. Stock, this thunderous engine produced 444 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. All told, this huge engine had 5.2 liters of displacement.
Now comes the Urus engine, which is far smaller. Coming in at 4.0 liters, this V8 has two-thirds the number of cylinders as the LM002’s V12 powerplant. That being said, this V8 is a bi-turbo engine using the latest technology, and Lamborghini proves that in 2018 you can do more with less.
The Urus V8 engine can produce 650 horsepower, which is far more than the 444 horsepower of the LM002 despite its much larger engine. That’s not even the biggest surprise. When it comes to torque, the Urus powerplant generates 626 pound-feet of torque. That leaves the LM002 firmly in the dust.
Weight is another huge consideration, especially considering advancements in Lamborghini construction techniques. The LM002, which debuted in 1987, was one heavy machine coming in at 6,780 pounds. Keep in mind that the LM002 has the same seating capacity as the Urus, and they are both carrying four-wheel drive equipment.
Now we come to the Urus weight, this figure is not final yet, but Lamborghini has promised that the final curb weight of the Urus will be 4,850 pounds or less. That means that the Urus will weigh nearly 30% less while having over 45% more horsepower and over 70% more torque. That’s one mean combination.

If all the above numbers didn’t give you enough of a clue, we will give you the definitive answer. The Urus is indeed faster than the LM002. To prove it, the numbers put the Urus at a 3.6-second 0-60 mph time whereas the LM002 had a 0-60 mph time of 7.7 seconds.
There are even more numbers to back this up. The Urus has a top speed of 305 km/h or 186.5 mph, on the other hand, the LM002 had a top speed of just 118 mph.
When it comes to stopping numbers, we don’t have a perfect comparison, but the numbers should be able to paint a clear enough picture. The Urus can go from 62-0 mph in just 110.5 feet. The LM002 went from 70-0 mph in 203 feet. That’s nearly double the distance while only going 8 mph faster.
Comparing acceleration, stopping, and top speed, we can definitively say that the Urus blows the LM002 out of the water.
